Overview
In the 2019 winter, my company peer and I decided to work on a side project to make the end of the year meaningful. We aim to launch an interesting service within 20 days. While doing ideation for that, I decided to work on a project on the subject of ideation itself.
Among the various ideation methods, there is a very simple but very effective method using random words. Using this method, we have proposed an application that can benefit all kinds of creators.

Background
I have friends who like drawing, designing, and writing. When working with them, they often told me "Say any word." When I really say any random word, they think for a second and then again say, "Tell me another word." When I came up with a word that motivates them, they were inspired to work on it. Any word I offered helped them in their creative work.
Design Process

Research
WOM
At first, I simply asked my friends who are fairy tale writers, product designers, illustrators, and service planners. Why are you asking me to say anything? And they gave me these answers.

Desk Research
For a more in-depth understanding, I've been looking into ideation methods to generate new ideas from random concepts. As a result, I was able to learn about related methods such as ‘Lateral Thinking’, ’Random Word Brainstorming’, and ‘Forced Relationship.’

🧐 What is it
By exposing our minds to random words that are unconnected to our problem or challenge, they provoke new associations, much like the ripple that spreads outward in all directions after you drop a pebble into a pond.
✏️ How to use
1. Select a random word. This word must be completely random and unrelated to your problem or challenge.
2. Think of as many things as you can that are associated with the random word you have selected and write them down. Write down as many associated ideas and concepts as possible.
3. Force connections between your random word and your problem or challenge, using the characteristics you identified in the previous step.
4. Write your ideas down.
🌟 Benefit
The ultimate benefit of word lists is that they help you to appreciate your brain’s awesome powers of association. As you cultivate this skill, you’ll come to realize that it can serve you any time, anywhere. Literally anything in your environment can become stimuli that you can use to make connections with your current problems and challenges. And that can open up a world of possibilities and new ideas that can help you to transform your world.

🧐 What is it
Forced Relationship(Connections) is the essence of creativity; the practice of combining new ideas that don’t appear to be related in any way. This idea helps you get ideas flowing when you are stuck. The concept of 'iPhone', which combines 'telephone', 'music', and 'internet' was a strong combination that broke the framework of the time(2007).
✏️ How to use
1. Prepare 300 to 1,000 small notes.
2. Write down words randomly on the memo, one per one memo.
3. Put them in the box and shake to mix.
4. Draw 2~3 memo papers like a lottery.
5. Create ideas by forcing these words together.
🌟 Benefit
This method works for both groups and individuals. Combining distinct things opens up new possibilities, and you can try novel combinations every day, even shortly. It is also easy for beginners who are having trouble thinking about ideas, and they can get into the habit of thinking openly. You can use not only words, but also questions, sentences, and pictures, and can be widely used not only in practice, but also in education and games.

🧐 What is it
Lateral Thinking is a deliberate, systematic creative-thinking process that deliberately looks at challenges from completely different angles. By introducing specific, unconventional thinking techniques, lateral thinking enables thinkers to find novel solutions that would otherwise remain uncovered.
🔑 4 Points
- Recognize the dominant ideas that polarize the perception of a problem.
- Search for different ways of looking at things.
- Relax rigid control of thinking.
- Use chance to encourage other ideas
✏️ 7 Techniques
- Alternatives: Use concepts to breed new ideas.
- Focus: Sharpen or change your focus to improve your creative efforts.
- Challenge: Break free from the limits of accepted ways of operating.
- Random Entry: Use unconnected input to open new lines of thinking.
- Provocation: Move from a provocative statement to useful ideas.
- Harvesting: Select the best of early ideas and shape them into useable approaches.
- Treatment of Ideas: Develop ideas and shape them to fit an organization or situation.
🌟 Benefit
Often trying to think harder in the same direction may not be as useful as changing direction. Effort in the same direction will not necessarily help you achieve your goal. Lateral thinking deliberately distances itself from "vertical" or logical thinking (the classic method for problem solving: working out the solution step-by-step from the given data).
Competitive Research
The above random identification methods tell us to write a word on a memo pad or pick it out from a dictionary, but I have found that many users are using an automatic word generator on the Internet for convenience. So I looked into the use of sites and applications where users automatically generate random words.

🔮
Need a service that can broaden one's thinking when they need to come up with a novel idea.
🔦
Need a service that helps to get away from the problems they had and approach in a new direction.
🌐
A random word generator that supports multiple languages including Korean is needed.
Theme
I wanted to create a service that helps all kinds of creators change the tendency that they habitually follow the same patterns of thinking, and come up with fresh ideas by providing random words.
According to the purpose of the service, I aimed to do not restrict users' thinkings and do not have any influence on their inspiration process. So I minimized the function of the service and pursued a very light application with a pure and clean concept.
Solutions

User Personas
Based on my insights from the research methods and solutions, I created three personas that captured the essence of our users and their characteristics to understand their needs and frustrations.

Sketching
I first quickly sketched out my ideas on paper to discuss the solutions and functions with the developer. Since the goal of this side project was to release the application within 2.5 weeks, we discussed the most essential features in the first release, and decided to proceed with the secondary features in the updated version.

Prototyping
After discussing the features to be implemented in the first release, I created prototype screens in Adobe XD. Since the functions to be implemented were relatively simple, I tried to solve most functions within the main screen for minimal depth. In this process, I thought about the essential and optimal interaction with the developer. Also, we have decided on the types of words to be provided by the application. In order to provide apps for all ages, we have selected about 15,000 Korean words and 5,000 English words that are most frequently used, excluding profanity.

Build & Iteration
Developer built the app based on the prototype while I prepared the necessary materials for the App Store and Play Store registration. We worked together and adjusted the screen to support Android and iOS, and repeated modifications to apply to all devices of various sizes. We have also developed tablet screen support for iPad and Galaxy Tab users.

English and Korean!
Try ideation in a language that is more convenient for you among Korean and English words. Over 15,000 Korean words and over 5000 English words provide 700 billion word combinations.

Enjoy 1, 2, or 3 words depending on your situation
You can set the number of words you want to combine from 1 to 3 as you like. We recommend 1 word for the ‘Random Word Brainstorming’ method and 2~3 words for the ‘Forced Relationship (Connections)’ method.

Save the words that come up with inspiration!
Save the words you feel inspiration by tapping right away! You can take it back out at any time and see it. Take a look at the words in your collection and create new combinations of ideas.

Did you miss a word? You can see again anytime!
Did you accidentally pass a word? Or does the new word you just saw and the previous word match? You can go back to previous words with the back button or swipe. Of course, you can go forward too!

Share your favorite words!
Do you want to transfer the words from the collection to another app? You can copy and paste selected words as well as easily transfer them to various apps such as messenger, mail, and memo.

If you enter the More menu, you can see detailed information about the app and the creator. Also, you can erase the words accumulated in the collection at any time.

Store Reviews
INFACTO is currently available for download on the App Store and Google Play Store, and has received a rating of 4.8 points on the App Store and 5.0 points on the Play Store. Below are some of the reviews from INFACTO users on both stores.

Light and Intuitive
“It's a great app for starting work that requires creativity. It seems to be very suitable for brainstorming with a combination of words that I never thought of. The advantage of supporting Korean and English and being able to collect and retain the history of selected words was good.”
- Cyanw** / App Store
Best Ideation App Ever!
“I didn't have an idea right now, so I needed an app like this. I will use it well!”
- Chcho4** / App Store
It seems like the first time I was born to write a review
“It is the first time I have written a review on my own, even if I have written it on purpose. I got the feeling that the ideas spreading in my head were sorted step by step. I think I will use it often when my head gets complicated or when I'm curious about what I really want.
If there is one thing I want, it would be nice to have a function that visually collects picked words and shows them at once~ I will use it well.”
- APK** / App Store
Creativity Enhancing App
“I was praised by the company for having many ideas since using this application. I use this app at the start of the day. Recommended if you want to improve IQ!”
- Manuejae** / App Store
Essential App for Designer
“An amazing idea that can stimulate your imagination with just vocabulary.”
- Rododu** / App Store
“It’s good to think in a new way. When copywriting at a company, I can be inspired more quickly and more quickly than when I just sit back and do research.”
- Yoon** / Google Play Store
“It is an intuitive and simple identification tool! As a product designer, I'm so glad that I can easily make ideas when starting a project. Haha Now, I think I can do creative brainstorming without having to search for ideas of others while searching for ideas. Thank you!”
- Sungw** / Google Play Store
“I liked it.. I downloaded it after being recommended by a friend, but I honestly thought it would be bad, but when I used it, it is more useful than I thought! In my case, if more than two words appear, the head gets too complicated, so I think 1 is the maximum. And the interface is clean, so I like it. Anyway, recommended.”
- Yeonh** / Google Play Store
Sketch & Wireframe
Before entering the UI design phase, we created the paper prototypes and rough wireframes to make our ideas more concrete, and to make sure that the Information Architecture we derived make sense. We added features and functionality to the initial idea and questioned our understanding of the idea itself.
